How deep your sky goes
The sky map is open without an account, down to magnitude 6.5 — what the naked eye sees. A free account takes it to 7.5. Premium takes it to 8 and opens the deep-sky catalogue on the map: 1,735 objects instead of the 14 photographed ones. Every screen stays open at every level.
Magnitude runs backwards: the higher the number, the fainter the star.
Under a dark sky the naked eye reaches about magnitude 6.5 — some 8,900 stars. Binoculars reach 7.5, or 25,700. A small telescope goes to 8: 41,500 stars, and the whole deep-sky catalog becomes drawable. SkyChart draws each of these skies from the same real catalogs — HYG for the stars, OpenNGC for the deep sky, the IAU for the boundaries. Never a decorative star, never an invented object.

Magnitude 8 · telescope
The whole catalog, and other ways of naming the sky.
- Everything in the free account
- Magnitude 8: 41,500 stars, the depth of a small telescope
- The whole deep-sky catalogue on the map: 1,735 objects with their symbols and designations, instead of the 14 photographed ones
- Three alternative sky cultures — Inuit, Boorong, Romanian — and their 76 illustrated figures

Without Premium the deep sky does not disappear: the 14 photographed objects — Andromeda, Orion, the Pleiades — stay on the map at every level, and search still finds all 1,735 catalogue objects by name or designation. What Premium adds is drawing them on the map.
Premium changes how deep the sky goes, not which screens you can open: every one of them stays available at every level.

Frequently asked questions
Everything to know before you start
Do I need an account to use SkyChart?
No. The sky map opens straight away, down to magnitude 6.5, with every screen available — tonight's sky, light and golden hours, calendar, satellites, augmented reality. A free account raises the depth to 7.5, syncs your favorite places and enables notifications, which need a recipient to be sent to.
What does Premium change, exactly?
The sky reaches magnitude 8 — 41,500 stars instead of 25,700. The deep-sky catalogue is drawn on the map: 1,735 objects with their symbols and designations, Messier 110/110 and Caldwell 109/109, where the free sky shows the 14 photographed ones. The three alternative sky cultures — Inuit, Boorong, Romanian — become available. And three more expert layers open up: the official IAU constellation boundaries, markers on stars with known exoplanets, and monthly cloud cover in the calendar. Every screen, the time slider, light pollution, satellites, augmented reality and tonight’s observing weather stay open at every level — and search finds all 1,735 catalogue objects whatever your level.
